Pensacola Electrical Apprenticeship College GNJ

The Pensacola Electrical GNJ Apprenticeship College is V.A. approved, with four years of on the job training and related study. Apprentices are expected to complete at least 2,000 hours of on the job training and 144 hours of related study a year. The apprentice goes to school one night a week for four hours, and when working out of town, must do his/her work through correspondence. In town apprentices attend school at George Stone Technical Center, 2400 Longleaf Drive, Pensacola, Florida 32526.

GSTC Goal

The job of an electrician is to plan layouts, install and repair wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus and control equipment. They plan new modified installations to minimize waste materials, provide access for future maintenance, and avoid unsightly hazardous and unreliable wiring consistent with specification and local electrical codes. They will prepare sketches showing location of wiring and equipment, or follow diagrams or blueprints insuring that concealed wiring is installed before completing of future walls, ceilings and flooring. They will learn to measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble, and install electrical conduit.

Being an electrician is a satisfying and challenging career. It is interesting hands on work, with good pay. You will get the pleasure of seeing what you have helped to build. The skills learned can lead to better and higher paying jobs; Foreman, Superintendent, Project Manager, Contractor. The choice is yours. You get out of it what you put into it.

Apprentices receive structured training, programmed pay increases, enchanced job security and recognition of achievements. If you are interested, speak to you employer, supervisor or call the Apprenticeship Coordinator, Kathryn Boyd, at (850) 941-6200 ext. 2183 Tuesday & Wednesdays only, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

All qualified applicants are welcome to apply for training. There will be no exceptions to this policy.

The apprenticeship program provides both in town and out of town work. At one time or another, our apprentices will probably be asked to work out of town. Some of our contractors bid jobs out of state and will need apprentices for those jobs.

As of now, the only cost incurred by the apprentice is for his/her books, one book per year. The books range in price. Apprentices are expected to pay for the books when they receive them. You will be required to have a hard hat. Some of the contractors want you to have your own tools or at least start buying them each payday.

The apprentices will be responsible for being in class each week, doing their lessons, and filling out a Monthly Training Report (MTR hours worked). This will be explained by the Coordinator before you begin the program.

Wages of the apprentice will vary from time to time depending on whether he or she is working in town, out of town or on a Davis Bacon job. When not out of town or working on a Davis Bacon job, their pay schedule will be based on a minimum pay scale, approved by the State Department of Labor. The scale is based on the average journeyman's wage rate for this area. The average journeyman wage rate in Pensacola, at the present time is $16.00 per hour. Below is the scale per six (6) months period. For the first six (6) months, the minimum apprentice wage will be 50% of the journeyman.

1st 6 months 50% $8.00 5th 6 months 70% $11.20
2nd 6 months 55% $8.80 6th 6 months 75% $12.00
3rd 6 months 60% $9.60 7th 6 months 80% $12.80
4th 6 months 65% $10.40 8th 6 months 85% $13.60
to Journeyman

This wage scale is for Non-Davis Bacon work only.

Enclosed is the process for becoming an apprentice, application, and questionnaire. You will need to fill out the application and questionnaire and return them to the Coordinator at the address given. You must have a High School Diploma or a GED.

Credit is allowed for past experience in the field. You will need a letter from that employer verifying the experience or evaluated by present employer. The Committee Coordinator will explain more to you during your orientation. Orientation will take around thirty minutes.

Each year, the Committee has a Completion Ceremony honoring those graduation apprentices, with certificates.

Anyone interested in applying for the apprentice program should contact Kathryn Boyd, Committe Coordinator, at George Stone Technical Center, 2400 Longleaf Drive, Room 206-A Pensacola, Florida, 32526. You may call and set up an appointment to meet with her on Tuesdays or Wednesdays by calling (850) 941-6200 ext. 2183. If she is not there when you call, leave a message and she will return your call.

Anyone transferring from one approved apprenticeship program to another will need to obtain a copy of their records. These can be mailed or brought to us at George Stone Technical Center. The Committee will give credit for time spent in another approved electrical apprenticeship program.
