The purpose of the Electrical Apprenticeship Program is to learn a skilled trade in the electrical industry. The Apprenticeship Program may require four or more years to complete, based on 2,000 hours of on-the-job training with a minimum of 144 hours of related classroom study each year. Apprentices attend class a minimum of one night a week and work with a participating contractor during the day receiving programmed pay increases.

In addition to structured training and pay increases, Apprentices receive enhanced job security and recognition of achievements. The program provides both in-town and out-of-town employment. Pensacola Electrical GNJ Apprenticeship College

The Pensacola Electrical GNJ  Apprenticeship College is VA approved, with four years of on the job training and related study. Apprentices are expected to complete at least 2,000 hours of on the job training and 144 hours of related study a year. The apprentice works for a participating contractor during the week and attends school one night a week for four hours. Any out of town apprentice must do their class work through correspondence.

The job of an electrician is to plan layouts, install and repair wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus and control equipment. They plan new modified installations to minimize waste materials, provide access for future maintenance, and avoid unslightly hazardous and unreliable wiring consistent with specifications and local electrical codes. They will prepare sketches showing location of wiring and equipment, or follow diagrams or blueprints insuring that concealed wiring is installed before completing of future walls, ceilings and flooring. They will learn to measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble, and install electrical conduit.

Being an electrician is a satisfying and challenging career. It is interesting hands on work, with good pay. You will get the pleasure of seeing what you have helped to build. The skills learned can lead to better and higher paying jobs; Foreman, Superintendent, Project Manager, Contractor.

You must be at least 18 years of age and have either a high school diploma or GED to make application to the program.

Wages of the apprentice will vary from time to time depending on whether he or she is working in town, out of town or on a Davis Bacon job. When not out of town or working on a Davis Bacon job, their pay schedule will be based on a minimum pay scale, approved by the State Department of Labor. The scale is based on the average journeyman's wage rate for this area. The average journeyman wage rate in Pensacola, at the present time, is $16.30 per hour. Below is the scale per six (6) months period. For the first six months, the minimum apprentice wage will be 50% of the journeyman.

This wage scale is for non-Davis Bacon work only.

 

Credit is allowed for past experience in the field. You will need a letter from that employer verifying the experience or evaluated by present employer. The Committee Coordinator will explain more to you during your orientation.

Anyone transferring from one approved apprenticeship to another will need to obtain a copy of their records. These can be mailed or brought to the Coordinator. The Committee will give credit for time spent in another approved electrical apprenticeship program.
